I’m a total geek and can’t get enough of Harry Potter, Twilight, Doctor Who, Star Wars and now The Mortal Instruments series. I picked up the first book City of Bones several months back and after chapter 3 I was hooked, flew through the 5 books and can’t wait for the release of the 6th and final book next year. I began reading the series knowing there was a movie in the works. Most aren’t fans of books turned movies but I totally am. Of course the movie doesn’t follow the book exactly but any reason to re-live the series makes me a happy geeky gal. I highly recommend you read the series, watch the movie, read again and watch the movie again.
Here’s there synopsis of City of Bones:
Set in contemporary New York City, a seemingly ordinary teenager, Clary Fray (Lily Collins), discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother (Lena Headey), Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures.
Of course there is a love story and it’s a forbidden love type of thing. My favorite character Jace Wayland (Jamie Campbell Bower) will quickly make you a fan of the series.
If you’re a fan of this awesome series you might be surprised to see such a bright display as black and darker colors have a strong presence in the movie but I went bright for a few reasons:
1. The Faeries (Fair Folk) from the book make me think of cheerful, bright and glowing displays.
2. Magnus Bane. Magnus is one of my favorite characters who likes to throw vibrant parties.
3. Doing something unexpected is good (and fun).
I incorported tiny touches to represent a few of the characters of City of Bones.
Clary, Simon and Clary’s mom Jocelyn are all represented by the coffee and sketchpad. Jocelyn is a painter/artist and Clary sketches also, which you’ll see lots of in the movie. Simon and Clary make regular coffee shop visits, this is in the movie too. Being a huge coffee fan I found it to be totally normal to have a cappuccino in the same company of a cocktail for this movie release display. I’ll have more on the cocktail, which I created with character Magnus Bane in mind, so you’ll have to pop back by later this week for the drink recipe and details!
Of course there was sweets and my girl Firefly Confections worked her magic and created these stunning cookies. She captured the angelic power symbol (aka rune) and both Shadow Hunter and Mundane (aka human) titles. Seriously. She rocks and is one of my favorite people, eva. When entertaining or creating a display with sweets her caramels should be a must have.
I pulled in a plant to represent the NYC apartment Clary lives in and also to represent Madame Dorothea, their neighbor who plays a pretty big roll in City of Bones. I’ll be sharing a little more on cute bagged potted plants later.
The custom rune prints were created by D and P Celebrations and I love love love them. Pam created these prints with having very little knowledge of the books or movie and totally blew me away. With advice from Carrie I assorted these beauties using my favorite jumbo white frame and wrapping paper as the backing. We chose a few basic runes and Pam used pastels to help encourage a bright movie release party display.
I’ve seen the movie twice now, yep, twice. Along with a few of my favorite ladies and fellow fans we had a blast enjoying the movie and they totally loved my display and Sandy’s cookies. Movie Release Parties and entertaining guests are totally my fave, talk about getting hyped up to view something you’ve been anticipating for months! I’m dyyyying to create a Harry Potter Holiday display simply just because and the second Hunger Games movie is quickly approaching. Time to start party planning, wink wink.Mortal Instrument Rune Prints Created by D and P Celebrations Custom Cookies Created by Firefly Confections Concept by Truly Chic Inspirations along with my fave friends who are also big fans.
